A New Dimension of Entertainment Awaits in Kabukicho — Even During the Day!
A brand-new entertainment venue has opened its doors in Shinjuku’s lively Kabukicho district: Ninja+Kabuki Tokyo. Here, traditional Japanese arts such as taiko drumming, sword fighting, ninja performances, traditional dance, and kabuki are fused with cutting-edge technology to create an electrifying show where the spirit of “wabi-sabi” meets the power of modern innovation.
This experience is captivating not just for international visitors but for Japanese audiences as well. The combination of thunderous sound, mesmerizing visuals, and dynamic performances makes for an unforgettable spectacle.
We had the chance to check it out firsthand!
Located right in the heart of Kabukicho, directly in front of the Kabukicho Cinecity Plaza, the entrance is marked by traditional lanterns—an easy landmark.
After receiving a headband and a drink at reception, you descend into a dimly lit stairway bathed in blue and black light. Before you know it, you’re immersed in the shadowy world of the ninja.
A soft haze of smoke fills the air, pulling you deeper into this surreal atmosphere.
The venue was packed with excited tourists from all over the world, each tying their headbands tight, ready for action.
Powerful Opening: Heart-Pounding Taiko Drum Performance
The show kicks off with ninja-costumed performers pounding on taiko drums. The deep, resonating bass vibrates through your entire body, instantly drawing you into the story unfolding on stage.
The lead performer, who has also appeared in the “Super Kabuki SEIMEI,” commands the stage with an intensity that leaves you mesmerized.
High-Flying Ninja Sword Battles You Can’t Take Your Eyes Off
Next up is a breathtaking sequence of ninja sword fights, choreographed to perfection with synchronized lighting and sound effects.
The clashing of swords, the performers’ sharp breathing, the shifting lights—every detail heightens the thrill.
Ancient legends come alive as you witness the ninjas’ extraordinary athleticism up close.
The Captivating Elegance of the Oiran Dance
Another highlight is the elegant performance of an oiran (courtesan), who captivates the audience with her mesmerizing expressions and graceful movements. Even without words, she beautifully conveys a spectrum of emotions.
During a solemn ritual reminiscent of traditional martial arts, the atmosphere becomes so charged that the audience falls silent, completely entranced.
Become a Ninja or Kabuki Performer Yourself!
After the show, a lively MC (speaking fluent English) invites audience members onto the stage for a fun interactive session. Participants get to strike ninja poses with prop swords or learn traditional kabuki stances, guided carefully by the performers.
Children and adults alike couldn’t get enough of it, each transformed into a ninja for a brief, thrilling moment.
Guests can even snap a group photo with the cast—a perfect keepsake from this 80-minute adventure.
Drinks and Souvenirs to Extend the Experience
A bar at the back of the venue offers original drinks themed after the show’s world, adding an extra layer of immersion.
At the souvenir corner, you can pick up shuriken (throwing stars) and T-shirts to commemorate your visit—affordable too, with shuriken starting at ¥1,000 and T-shirts at ¥3,000.
Ninja+Kabuki Tokyo delivers a bold fusion of traditional Japanese arts and modern entertainment technology, offering a fresh, exciting experience you won’t find anywhere else.
Produced by Denjiro Tanaka, a renowned figure in kabuki music who also performed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Opening Ceremony, this show is a true must-see in Shinjuku.
If you’re visiting Tokyo, don’t miss the chance to experience “Ninja+Kabuki Tokyo” — a thrilling adventure available even in the daytime!
