East Area Sightseeing

Hyashi Fumiko Kaikan

In around 8 minutes walking distance from Nakai station on Seibu Shinjuku line, you will see a green stone wall in a quiet residential area.

This is a house where the female writer “Fumiko Hayashi”, who is well known for such as novels “Hourou-ki (A Wanderer’s Notebook)”, “Ukigumo” and much more, have lived until she passed away (from 1941 to 1951).

It is now open to the public as a memorial hall.

The study room where she did her writing, tea room, garden in which Moso bamboo has planted were still left the same way even up until today and the atelier which was used by her painter husband has now become an exhibition room.
