How to use Chopsticks in Japan!!

Chopsticks are the main eating utensil used in Japan. They have long been used to eat everything from rice and meat, to noodles, salad, and so much more!
Most of foreign visitors to Japan are surprisingly good at using chopsticks once they have tried using them for only a few times.

But, can you be sure your are holding the chopsticks correctly? Did you know that are a number of etiquette rules for use of chopsticks?

How To Use Chopsticks….

● Pick up the first chopstick and place it between your middle finger and the base of your thumb.

● Grip the second chopstick with your index finger and thumb.

● Move only the top stick up and down.

Make it sure that the broad ends of the chopsticks do not make an “X”. If it make an “X” shape, it is wrong and it will be more difficult to pick up the food. So, let’s know more about the etiquette for using a pair of chopsticks!

1. Tataki bashi 叩き箸

Do not tap your chopsticks on the table or dishes as drumming.

2. Hashi Watshi 箸渡し

Do not pass food to other person from chopsticks to chopsticks.

3. Tate Bashi 立て箸

Do not stick it on the rice. In Japanese culture, sticking chopsticks vertically into rice should only be done only during funeral rituals.

4. Sashi bashi 指し箸

Do not point at someone by chopsticks.

5. Yose bashi 寄せ箸
chopstick5
Do not pull a dish by your chopsticks.

6. Sashi bashi 刺し箸
chopstick6
Do not stub food with your chopsticks.
