Enjoy Classic, Seasonal, and Unique Flavors of Dango
In the heart of Shinjuku Sanchome, Oiwake Dango Honpo is a beloved traditional Japanese sweets shop offering a wide variety of dango — chewy rice dumplings on skewers. From timeless classics to seasonal specialties, there’s something here for everyone.
You’ll find classic flavors like mitarashi (sweet soy glaze), koshian (smooth red bean paste), yomogi (mugwort), and norimaki (wrapped with seaweed). Adventurous eaters can also try creative options like ginger, raw soy sauce, and Naito shichimi (a local seven-spice blend).
During the year, limited-time offerings make each visit exciting. In early spring, enjoy the fruity Strawberry Anko (available until around April), while Honey Lemon and Apricot Anko become available from early summer. These refreshing flavors highlight the shop’s commitment to seasonal delights.
A History Rooted in Tradition
Oiwake Dango Honpo traces its origins back to the Muromachi period (1336–1573). Legend has it that a local noble family presented dango at a feast hosted by the samurai Ota Dokan, a historical figure in Musashino.
Later, during the Genroku era (1698), a tea house offering the beloved “Dokan Dango” relocated to Shinjuku’s Oiwake area and became known as “Oiwake Dango.”
The current Oiwake Dango Honpo was founded in 1947, after World War II, as a sweet shop called Yanagiya by Toemon Fujii. He revived the traditional flavors in the very location tied to its rich history.
Experience the Taste of Tradition
Oiwake Dango Honpo continues to be a symbol of Shinjuku’s rich cultural history. With its diverse selection of dango and seasonal specialties, each visit brings something new to discover.
Whether you’re exploring Shinjuku or simply in search of a relaxing spot to savor traditional Japanese sweets, Oiwake Dango Honpo offers a warm and inviting experience.
