“The 18th Shinjuku Eisa Festival” will be held on Saturday, July 27th.
Eisa will be shown in the main streets around Shinjuku east and west exit area!
It is a traditional performing art that is danced in Obon (お盆) in Okinawa prefecture and Amami Islands.
Obon is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the spirits of one’s ancestors.
In Okinawa the timing of Obon is determined by the lunar calendar which is from the 13th to 15th of July and the form of folk dance that is performed by young people of each community during the Bon festival to honor the spirits of their ancestors is called a ‘Eisa’.
