Suehirotei (末広亭) is a theatre located in Suehiro dori, Shinjuku where you can enjoy “Rakugo” in an old-fashioned retro atmosphere.
Rakugo is the traditional Japanese art of storytelling. It was said that, the start of Rakugo begins from 1798 which is performed for the first time by “Sansoteikaraku”(first generation) in Shimotani Shrine, Tokyo.
At first this place was known as “Yoseba”, a place where large numbers of recruiters and job seekers are gathered. Later it was called “Yose” and transfers to an entertainment place for the common people. Here you can enjoy rakugo, magic, acrobatics, Japanese folk song, etc.
In the era when entertainment was scarce, there is at least one storyteller’s house in each town but due to the appearance of radio and television, people became detached from this tradition and as a result the storyteller’s house was no longer needed and where gradually closed down one after another. Meanwhile, Suehirotei is still supported by large number of fans and still going on till this very day!
