Discover the Free Observatory at Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building<\/h3>\n

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, relocated from Marunouchi to Shinjuku in 1991, consists of the 48-story Main Building No.1, the 34-story Main Building No.2, and the Assembly Building.
\nIts postmodern architecture stands out in the Shinjuku skyline, easily recognizable even from afar.<\/p>\n

The observatories are located on the 45th floor of Main Building No.1, split into the South and North Observation Decks.
\nBoth offer free access to breathtaking views, a rare find in Tokyo.<\/p>\n

A high-speed elevator takes you to the 45th floor (202 meters above ground) in just 55 seconds.
\nCaf\u00e9s and restaurants allow you to enjoy meals while admiring panoramic views.
\nOn clear days, you can spot Meiji Shrine, Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree\u2014and even Mount Fuji in the distance.<\/p>\n

On April 23, 2025, a new souvenir shop called “TOKYO Mikke!” opened at the South Observatory.<\/p>\n

The shop offers around 1,500 Tokyo-themed items, including original daruma dolls and Edo Kiriko glassware.
\nThere is also a caf\u00e9 where visitors can enjoy soft-serve ice cream and sake, served in special masu cups featuring designs of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and Mount Fuji.<\/p>\n

The South Observatory also features the “Tokyo Omoide Piano,” supervised by artist Yayoi Kusama.
\nVisitors can play freely for up to five minutes during available hours (10:00\u201312:00 and 14:00\u201316:00).
\nNote: Piano use is suspended from February 3 to late April 2025 due to renovation works. Please check the latest information on the official site.<\/p>\n

The South Observatory was renovated and reopened in spring 2019, providing an even more comfortable experience.<\/p>\n

North Observatory Highlights<\/h4>\n\"Tokyo\n

The North Observatory offers wider open views, especially toward western Tokyo, where fewer skyscrapers obstruct the skyline.<\/p>\n

Inside, the observatory houses a shop operated by Hakuhinkan Toy Park and features a range of unique Japanese toys\u2014including capsule toy machines with Star Wars themes.<\/p>\n

TOKYO Night & Light<\/h4>\n

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building also hosts “TOKYO Night & Light,” a spectacular projection mapping event.<\/p>\n

A dazzling show of lights and sounds is projected onto the east facade of Main Building No.1, featuring famous characters like Godzilla and Gundam.
\nThe show takes place nightly from sunset until around 9:00 p.m., and admission is free. (Note: Performances may vary based on weather or events.)<\/p>\n
